Pigs in a Blanket
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 teaspoon active dry yeast
- 1/3 cup plus 1 teaspoon sugar divided
- 2/3 cup warm milk
- 1/3 cup warm water
- 1 large egg beaten
- 2 Tablespoon plus 2 teaspoon shortening melted
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 3 2/3 cup all-purpose flour
- 10 hot dogs
- 2 slices american cheese
Instructions
- Activate the yeast: In a mixing bowl, dissolve 1 package yeast and 1 teaspoon sugar in 2/3 cup warm milk and 1/3 cup warm water. Let stand for 5 minutes, or until the mixture becomes frothy.Make the dough: Add 1 beaten egg, 2 tablespoons plus 2 teaspoons melted shortening, 1 teaspoon salt, and the remaining 1/3 cup sugar to the yeast mixture. Gradually add 3 2/3 cups flour, mixing until a soft dough forms.Knead the dough: Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes, or until smooth and elastic.Let the dough rise: Place the dough in a greased bowl, turning it once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.Prepare the hot dogs: While the dough is rising, make a 1/3-inch-deep slit lengthwise in each hot dog. Cut the 2 slices of American cheese into five strips and place one strip of cheese in the slit of each hot dog.Shape the dough: Punch down the dough and divide it into 10 portions. Roll each portion into a 5-inch by 2 1/2-inch rectangle.Wrap the hot dogs: Wrap each rectangle of dough around the prepared hot dog, pinching the seams and ends to seal the dough.Let the dough rise again: Place the wrapped hot dogs seam side down on greased baking sheets. Let them rise for another 30 minutes.Bake the Pigs in a Blanket: Preheat the oven to 350°F. Bake the pigs in a blanket for 15-18 minutes, or until golden brown.Serve: Let them cool slightly before serving.
